Bring on the Barcolana: MSC Sailing Team Ready for World’s Largest Regatta

06/10/2023

MSC is delighted to support the Barcolana Regatta, the world’s largest sailing race. The MSC Sailing Team will be at the start line for the official race on Sunday 8 October, following a week of special events in Trieste, Italy.

As a company with a strong nautical heritage and a passion for the sea, MSC is proud to sponsor and compete in the 55th annual Barcolana. As well as supporting the regatta as a Gold Sponsor, we have lots of exciting activities underway with customers and visitors throughout this historic event that started on Friday 29 September.

MSC has close ties to the world of sailing and our sailing team regularly participates in international sailing events, such as the Spanish Snipe Class Sailing Championships and Trofeo S.M. La Reina Regatta earlier this year.

Did you know?

The Barcolana is a major event in the international sailing calendar: last year, 614 boats and 1614 sailors took part.

A one-of-a-kind racing experience

Attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators, the Barcolana Regatta turns Trieste into the European capital of sailing. This year’s event started on Friday 29 September, finishing with the race on Sunday 8 October. With a total length of 13 nautical miles, the course is a quadrangle with fixed vertices positioned in the Gulf of Trieste.

Meet the MSC Sailing Team

Led by professional skipper Nicolas Groux, the MSC Sailing Team is excited to compete in this year’s race. While Nicolas has taken part in the event before, six MSC employees from our Geneva headquarters – Olivier Raison, Lars Termansen, Olmo Del Pozzo, Fabio Di Rosa, Angelo Pietrantonio and Jean-Charles Siraudin – will be participating for the first time.

Originally established as an internal initiative for employees, the MSC Sailing Team soon reached a high enough level to participate in international regattas. The team now takes part in several races each year and recently won the Grand Prix Psaros 33 on Lake Geneva.
